Ginolis – precision technology in a simple form

A new, recognisable design language and product identity were created for Ginolis’s new product and production line. The product’s scalability was considered from the outset: Kaste Lab can operate as a standalone device, or multiple units can be linked together as part of a larger production system. The device’s softly rounded form continues naturally from one unit to the next, creating a cohesive visual whole.

The primary goal of Seos Design’s industrial design work was to transform a technically advanced automation device into an approachable, safe and intuitive product while establishing a clear and distinctive visual identity for Ginolis’s new product range.

Precision automation in a compact form

Ginolis is a Finnish specialist in automation and precision robotics, developing solutions particularly for diagnostics, small-volume liquid handling and medical device manufacturing. Kaste Lab brings Ginolis’s precision dispensing technology into a compact benchtop device designed for laboratory environments.

The design process began with the challenge of fitting a technically demanding system into a compact format. The internal mechanics, the user’s working area, safety and protection, and the device’s external structure had to be combined into a clear and purposeful whole.

A new design language that scales from a standalone device to a production line

A new design language was created for Kaste Lab that needed to work both as a standalone product and as part of a system comprising multiple devices. The softly rounded upper section creates a recognisable silhouette and visually continues the form from one device to the next. When several Kaste Lab units are placed side by side, the individual products form a cohesive and controlled production line.

Large, calm surfaces balance the device’s technical character and make the overall appearance more approachable. The dark, transparent front section defines and protects the working area while allowing the process to be observed. The technology remains visible to the user when it has functional relevance, without allowing the device’s internal complexity to dominate its external appearance.

Usability and safety as part of the design

Usability and safety were integral to the industrial design of Kaste Lab. The placement of doors, handles, controls and the working area was examined from the perspective of the user’s workflow.

The clearly structured front section directs the user’s attention to the key points of interaction, while good visibility into the working area makes it easier to monitor the device’s operation. Accessibility and logically positioned functions support smooth daily work in a laboratory environment.

The design also aimed to communicate the device’s operation as intuitively as possible: active points of interaction are clearly distinguishable, while the calmer exterior surfaces bring the technical system together as a cohesive product.

Design built around the technical system

Seos Design’s work combined industrial design, usability, product identity, and consideration of the device’s technical requirements and manufacturability.

The external structure of Kaste Lab was developed in close connection with the device’s technical architecture. The design was not created as a separate shell around the technical system; instead, functional, safety-related and manufacturing requirements formed the foundation of the product’s design language.

This transformed a technically complex system into a visually clear and recognisable product whose identity can continue across future Ginolis products and broader product systems.

A recognisable identity for a new product range

The result is a compact automation device in which Ginolis’s precision technology, usability, safety and industrial design form a cohesive whole.

Kaste Lab functions as a standalone product, but its design language has also been created to scale to systems comprising multiple devices. The smoothly continuous geometry, clear colour division and carefully considered points of interaction establish a new, recognisable product identity for Ginolis and make advanced automation technology an approachable part of the modern laboratory environment.
