More presentations! I was invited to speak on sustainable product development on Nordic CSR Conference at Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki. Thanks to organizers, Net Impact Hanken - it was a great event, very professionally organized and with great speakers.

One thing we're very interested in here at Seos is research. We try to be active in scientific correspondence whenever possible, and although Lotta is our Chief Scientist at the moment (she's doing a PhD on sustainable innovation), other guys chip in as well. Here's a paper and a presentation we had at European Academy of Design's 2009 conference in Aberdeen, 1-4.4.09.

Here's a presentation we gave at Design Forum Finland's sustainability event on Wednesday, 11.3.09. A thought to consider: there's broad support, both empirical and anecdotal, to the notion that resource constraints spark innovation by forcing the developers to re-invent the traditional ways of doing things. 

Sustainable design is all about setting constraints on design, and doing it in a non-arbitrary way. Say, you want to reduce material inputs by 50 % - how do you do it? Basically, there's three ways to set resource constraints to your product development team: 

1. "Because I say so"
2. "Because our quarterly earnings targets require it"
3. "Because it helps us help the Earth"

Seems that people just can't get enough from sustainable design; here's a whopper of slides we used when presenting a workshop on sustainable design to a group of advanced degree students at Design Factory.
